Full membership

Full membership is open to anyone who can demonstrate that they have an appropriate level of experience to conduct independent examinations to a high standard.

Full membership is awarded in one of three categories:

Licentiate (LCIE) - is normally awarded to voluntary independent examiners who work with smaller charities. They are authorised to examine the accounts of charities having an income of less than £100,000 pa. Under the Charities Act 1993 charities of this size registered in England & Wales may present their accounts in a Receipts & Payments format or in a simplified Accruals format. Charities registered in Scotland have to prepare Accruals accounts when their income exceeds £100,000 pa.

Licentiate is awarded in one of two sub-categories according to experience

Member (MCIE) - is normally awarded to independent examiners who work with larger charities. They are authorised to examine the accounts of charities having an income of less than £250,000 or the legal limit for independent examination where that is smaller

Fellow (FCIE) - is normally awarded to experienced independent examiners who are authorised to examine accounts up £500,000 for independent examination in any part of the UK.
